Finding Out What the Rock Is
Weathered rock, floaters and solid basalt all need different handling. We work out the type and extent first, then decide whether to break it, dig it or bring in specialist gear.
Rock Breaking & Removal
Basalt and other hard rock broken out and carted away, planned around access, nearby structures and proper disposal.
Planned properly. Finished tidy.
Hard ground and buried rock can stall excavation and drive up project costs if they are not handled properly. Our team offers rock breaking and removal in Auckland using hydraulic breakers, powerful excavators and proven techniques to clear even the toughest ground.
We work on house sites, driveways, trenches, pools, retaining wall footings and commercial developments, breaking oversized rock into manageable pieces and removing it safely. Each job begins with an assessment of the rock type, access and surrounding structures so that vibration, noise and disruption stay under control.
Once the rock is cleared, your site is ready for excavation, levelling or construction to continue without delay. We provide honest advice, upfront pricing and dependable workmanship. Call us today for a free, no-obligation quote.

Our hydraulic breakers and rock attachments are chosen for the hardness and volume in front of us. The right hammer makes steady progress where the wrong one just bounces.
Close to houses, walls or boundaries, we adjust how we break to limit vibration and shock, lowering the chance of cracking nearby structures or services.
Once it’s broken, the rock is loaded out or moved to where you can use it, so digging or building can carry on without obstacles in the way.
You can’t always tell what’s under the surface until you’re into it. We give you our best estimate and tell you early if the rock is turning out harder or deeper than expected.
When we’re done, the area is clear for foundations, further digging or landscaping, so buried rock doesn’t hold up a later stage of your project.
Often booked alongside Site Preparation, Land Clearing, Vegetation Removal, Grass Removal and other prep work where access, levels and a tidy handover count. It all sits within our site preparation and groundwork work.
We pick the machine and attachments only once we have looked at access, reach, the ground, how much material is moving and the finish you need.
What applies depends on Auckland Council, your property and the job. Any approvals, beforeUdig locating and site controls need confirming before we start.
What drives the cost
Every site is different. Here is what makes the biggest difference to a rock breaking & removal quote.
Solid basalt takes much longer to break than weathered or softer rock. More hours on the breaker and the excavator mean a higher total for the job.
A few boulders are a quick job. A whole floater field or a solid seam to remove needs far more breaking, loading and carting, and the cost scales with it.
Rock found deep in a cut or in a hard-to-reach corner slows everything down and can need specialist gear, which pushes the price higher.
Breaking close to a house or fence line has to be done more gently to keep vibration under control. That slower approach adds time to the work.
What we bring
Rock breaking hardly ever stands alone; it’s usually part of a larger dig or site preparation job, and we already have what’s needed to keep going once the rock is out of the way. With our own excavators, breakers and tipper trucks, we can break the rock, load it and cart it away without waiting on anyone else. A single crew runs the whole process, so your project isn’t stuck in the gap between a rock-breaking contractor and an excavation one.
What is covered
We price rock on an assumption about what lies underground, and that assumption goes in writing.
Why work with us
Hitting rock partway through a dig can blow out a programme quickly if your contractor isn’t set up for it. We look at the type and extent of the rock before we start, then bring hydraulic breakers and machines suited to that ground, because Auckland basalt doesn’t give way to a one-size approach. Near houses, walls and boundaries we keep a close eye on vibration so the breaking doesn’t cause damage nobody planned for.
Broken rock is loaded and carted away in our own trucks, so excavation or building can carry on without a gap. From heavy clay suburbs to old lava flows, we’ve dealt with most of what Auckland’s ground can throw at a job, and that local knowledge counts when conditions are hard to predict. We give you realistic timeframes up front and tell you straight away if the rock changes the picture.
Getting the site ready
Basalt never behaves exactly as planned, so avoidable delays hurt. These four take care of the ones you control.
The excavator and hammer need an unobstructed way to the rock. Shift vehicles, gear or garden features that would sit in the machine’s path.
Breaking rock sends heavy vibration and impact through the ground. If pipes, cables or irrigation run near the rock, tell us where so we can plan around them.
Mark the full extent of rock to be broken out or carted away. Agreeing the scope early avoids confusion once the breaker is set up and running.
Rock breaking is among the loudest earthworks jobs there is. A heads-up next door, especially close to a boundary, stops noise complaints from pausing the work.
Where we work
Out in the Waitākere Ranges foothills, from Titirangi round to Swanson, hard rock under the topsoil is part of life, so that’s where our breakers are kept busiest.
Rock turns up all over Auckland, including old lava flows across the isthmus, and we’ll break and remove it wherever it is.
Common questions
We work right across metropolitan Auckland, and regional or rural jobs can be looked at case by case. Include your suburb when you ask for a quote and we’ll confirm whether we can help.
Not always. Simpler jobs can often be priced from plans and photos, but sites with awkward access or a complicated scope are usually worth a visit first.
It depends on Auckland Council’s rules, your property and the scope of the job. Check what applies before anything starts—we can help you work out what to ask the council.
We cover residential, rural, commercial and civil work. Whether a particular job suits us comes down to access, programme, the plant needed and the confirmed scope.
